What will I be studying?

  • English Consists of three areas:
  • Speaking and Listening
  • Reading
  • Writing

These skills will be developed over Year 7 in the following topics:

  • Reading Novels
  • Autobiographical Writing
  • Shakespeare research
  • Writing non fiction
  • Poetry Reading
  • Media texts
  • Writing to argue and persuade

These skills will be developed over Year 8 in the following topics:

  • Reading novels, poetry and drama scripts
  • Studying short texts from particular genres
  • Writing non-fiction
  • Reading media texts and preparing spoken news pieces
  • Study and performance of Shakespeare

These skills will be developed over Year 9 in the following topics:

  • Reading novels, poetry and drama scripts
  • Studying short texts from particular genres
  • Writing non-fiction
  • Study and performance of Shakespeare
  • Reading and analysing a variety of media texts

How will I be assessed?

Assessed work is kept in a Key Stage 3 folder which traces students’ progress through to the end of Year 9. There will be assessed ‘key pieces’ throughout the year – as follows

  1. Autobiographical Writing
  2. Reading test
  3. Writing non fiction
  4. Story writing
  5. Reading and writing non fiction
  6. Tests
  7. Writing to Argue and Persuade
  8. Narrative writing
  9. Reading test based on study of a novel
  10. Writing to inform, explain and describe
  11. End of year tests on reading and writing
  12. Reading test based on study of poetry

Assessments of speaking and listening will be made throughout the year.

How are teaching Groups organised?

There are seven groups, in ability sets 1-7.

Provision for Gifted and Talented students

As students are organised into groups on an ability basis, the more able can attempt more challenging reading texts, writing tasks and styles of learning. Additional homework may also be set to extend learning.

What extra-curricular opportunities are available to extend learning?

  • The Times Spelling Bee competition
  • Rainbow reading scheme
  • Students have the opportunity to take part in BBC School Report in March
  • Extra-curricular Media Studies GCSE entry
